FAQ

Expert Q&A

Answers to the most common NC SDIP questions.

Two tickets, one stop. How many points?

Under official NC SDIP Rule 5.B.1.a, you are charged for the highest point violation only in a single stop. For example, if you get a speeding ticket (2 pts) and an illegal passing ticket (2 pts) at the same time, you only receive 2 points total.

Does a seatbelt ticket give insurance points?

No. In North Carolina, a seatbelt violation is a non-moving violation for insurance purposes. It will not trigger an SDIP surcharge on your policy.

Does the car owner get points if someone else drives?

Yes. SDIP points are applied to the policy, not just the driver. The surcharge is assigned to the most expensive vehicle on the policy regardless of who was driving.

Will a parking ticket raise my premium?

No. Parking tickets are non-moving violations. NC SDIP only tracks moving traffic violations and at-fault accidents. Your premium is safe.

How long do SDIP points stay on my record?

As of July 2025, convictions of 4 or more points now have a 5-year (60-month) lookback period, up from the previous 3 years. Minor violations with fewer points may still use a shorter lookback period depending on the carrier.
