Quick Answer

If the North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated your crash, its public website can provide an uncertified DMV-349 report. NCSHP says reports are normally available within 5 to 7 business days for crashes it investigated on or after May 16, 2013. You can search by report number, last name, driver license number, or plate number. This independent guide sends you to the official government search and does not collect your private report details.

Know the difference

Online NCSHP copy versus certified NCDMV report

They serve different purposes. Choosing the correct one can prevent extra work.

NCSHP Online Report

  • Uncertified DMV-349 copy
  • Only crashes investigated by NCSHP
  • Normally entered within 5 to 7 business days
  • Four public search methods

Certified NCDMV Report

  • Official certified crash record
  • Reports from North Carolina law-enforcement agencies
  • Individuals request by mail or at designated locations
  • Regulated access and request requirements apply
Troubleshooting

Why your report may not appear

Most failed searches come down to timing, agency, or one detail that does not match the report.

It Is Still Processing

Wait until at least the fifth business day. Weekends and state holidays can extend the practical wait.

Another Agency Responded

City police and sheriff reports are not part of the NCSHP-only public search.

A Detail Does Not Match

Confirm the crash date, county, spelling, report number, license number, or plate exactly as recorded.

Common questions

NC accident report FAQs

How long does it take for an NC Highway Patrol accident report to appear online?

NCSHP says reports are normally entered into its system within 5 to 7 business days. This is not a guarantee, and holidays or additional investigation may extend the wait.

Can I search for an NCSHP accident report by name?

Yes. The official NCSHP site allows searches by last name, report number, driver license number, or vehicle plate number. You will also need the accident date and county.

Is the online NCSHP accident report certified?

No. NCSHP clearly states that the public online copy is not a certified crash report. Certified reports are requested separately through NCDMV.

Why can I not find my report?

It may still be processing, a local police department or sheriff may have investigated instead, or one of your search details may not exactly match the report.

Does this page collect my report information?

No. We do not ask for names, report numbers, license numbers, or plate numbers. The optional date estimate runs only in your browser. Private report-search information is entered on the official NCSHP website.

Can Bill Layne Insurance change or certify my accident report?

No. Bill Layne Insurance Agency is an independent insurance agency, not a government records office. Questions about the accuracy, certification, or release of a report must be handled by the investigating agency or NCDMV.
