UNCLAIMED MONEY

Money the State May Be Holding for You

Old refunds, forgotten deposits, last paychecks, insurance payouts — when companies can't find you, the money goes to the NC Treasurer until you claim it.

NCCash — NC Unclaimed Property

Type your name (try maiden names and misspellings too) and see instantly if the state is holding money for you. Claims are free to file and typically process in about 90 days. Their NCCash Match program even mails checks under $5,000 automatically to verified owners.

Who it's for: Everyone. Search yourself, your kids, your parents, even a business you owned.

Never Pay a "Finder"

If someone calls, mails, or emails offering to recover your unclaimed money for a fee — you don't need them. Searching and claiming through NCCash.gov is completely free, and the official call center will even search for you over the phone at no cost.

Rule of thumb: every program on this page is free. Anyone charging you for access to "government money" is a red flag.

PRESCRIPTION COSTS

Paying Too Much for Medications?

Most people overpaying for prescriptions qualify for at least one of these. Start at the top and work down.

Verified Jul 2026

Verified Jul 2026

Cost Plus Drugs

Mark Cuban's online pharmacy sells nearly 1,000 generic medications at true cost plus a flat 15% markup, $3 pharmacy fee, and ~$5 shipping — the price math is printed right on every listing. Many common generics cost a few dollars a month.

Good to know: Generics only — no insulin or refrigerated meds, and no controlled substances. Works with or without insurance.

Verified Jul 2026

GoodRx

Free coupons that often beat your insurance copay at local pharmacies — including the ones right here in Elkin, Dobson, and Mount Airy. Compare prices at every pharmacy near you, show the coupon on your phone at pickup.

Pro tip: Check GoodRx even if you have insurance — the coupon price is sometimes lower than your copay. Just ask the pharmacist to compare.

Verified Jul 2026

NeedyMeds

A nonprofit database of manufacturer patient assistance programs — the programs where drug makers give brand-name medications free or nearly free to families who qualify. If you take an expensive brand-name drug, look it up here first.

Who it's for: Anyone on a costly brand-name medication, insured or not. Most people have no idea these programs exist.

Verified Jul 2026

Insulin: You Shouldn't Pay Over $35/Month

Medicare caps insulin at $35/month, and the three major makers — Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi — each run their own $35/month cap programs for most everyone else, insured or uninsured. If you're paying hundreds for insulin, call your maker's savings program this week.

How to start: Search "[your insulin brand] savings program" or ask your pharmacist which manufacturer program covers your insulin.

Verified Jul 2026

Medicine Assistance Tool

The pharmaceutical industry's own search engine for finding assistance on your specific medication. Heads up: it's moving to a new home at AmericasMedicines.com during 2026 — if one address doesn't work, try the other.

Who it's for: A second place to check after NeedyMeds for brand-name drug help.

How to apply: Online at ePASS, at your county DSS, or ask an NC Navigator (above) to walk you through it.

INTERNET

Affordable Internet Still Exists

The federal ACP discount ended in 2024 — anyone still promising you a "$30 government internet credit" is out of date or a scam. But these are real, today:

Verified Jul 2026

Spectrum Internet Assist

About $25/month for 50 Mbps — plenty for schoolwork, streaming, and telehealth. Qualify through the school lunch program (many local schools qualify every student automatically) or SSI for those 65+.

Verified Jul 2026

AT&T Access

Around $30/month for qualifying households (SNAP, SSI, or income-based), with speeds up to 100 Mbps where AT&T fiber reaches. Availability varies by address in our area, so check yours.

Verified Jul 2026

Lifeline (FCC)

The one federal discount that survived: up to $9.25/month off phone or internet service for households on SNAP, Medicaid, or SSI. It stacks with the provider plans on the left.

Why is an insurance agency publishing this?

Fair question. We've been the local insurance agency in Elkin since 2005, and every week someone sits across from us stressed about money — a prescription that tripled, a heating bill after a hard winter, a parent confused by Medicare. The help above already exists. It's just scattered across a dozen government and nonprofit websites nobody knows about.

So we gathered it in one place, verified every link and phone number ourselves, and put it where our neighbors can find it. There's no signup, no catch, and we don't collect anything — we don't even know you visited. We're not affiliated with any of these programs and we don't earn a penny from them.

If a link breaks or a program changes, tell us: (336) 835-1993 or Save@BillLayneInsurance.com. And if you'd like a free second look at your auto or home insurance while you're cutting costs, that part is what we do. — Bill Layne

Every program above was independently verified by our team on July 9, 2026. Program rules, dates, and funding change — always confirm details with the program directly before making plans.
COMMON QUESTIONS

Real Help Finder FAQ

Quick answers about using these assistance programs.

Are these programs really free?

Yes. Every program listed here is free to apply for and free to use (the internet plans and Cost Plus Drugs charge for their service, but at genuinely reduced prices with no application fees). If anyone ever asks you to pay a fee to "unlock" government assistance or unclaimed money, walk away — that's a scam.

Will applying for assistance hurt my credit or my insurance rates?

No. Applying for LIEAP, SNAP, Medicaid, food pantry help, or prescription assistance does not appear on your credit report and has no effect on your auto or home insurance rates.

I make too much for assistance but bills are still tight. What applies to me?

Start with the ones that have no income limits: search NCCash.gov for unclaimed money, check GoodRx and Cost Plus Drugs for cheaper prescriptions, and call SHIIP if you're near Medicare age. Those four help households at every income level.

Do you get paid if I use these links?

No. There are no affiliate links or referral fees on this page. We're a local Elkin insurance agency and built this as a free community resource. We verify the links, and that's our only involvement.

What if I need help that isn't listed here?

Dial 2-1-1 from any phone (free, 24/7, English and Spanish) or search findhelp.org by zip code — between them they cover rent, childcare, transportation, counseling, and nearly everything else. And if you're a local neighbor who's simply stuck, call our office and we'll try to point you in the right direction.

Know someone who needs this page?

Share it. Print it. Text it to a friend. Helping a neighbor find $400 at NCCash or free medications costs you nothing.
