New Parents
Insurance Checklist

A baby changes everything — including your insurance needs. Here's what every NC parent should review before (or right after) the baby arrives.

Top Priority: Life Insurance

If something happens to you, who covers the mortgage, daycare, and daily expenses? A 20-year term life policy for a healthy 30-year-old in NC can cost less than $25/month for $500,000 in coverage. Don't wait — premiums go up with age.

Your 6-Point Insurance Checklist

Step 1

Get Term Life Insurance

Both parents need coverage. A 20-year term policy covers you until the kids are independent. In NC, a $500K policy for a healthy 30-year-old starts around $20-30/month.

Rule of thumb: Coverage = 10x your annual income + outstanding debts + future education costs.
Step 2

Review Health Insurance

Add baby to your health plan within 30 days of birth (this is a qualifying life event). Compare family plan costs vs. adding a dependent. Check that your pediatrician is in-network.

NC tip: If you miss the 30-day window, you may have to wait until Open Enrollment. Don't delay.
Step 3

Update Homeowners / Renters Insurance

Baby gear adds up fast — cribs, strollers, car seats, monitors. Increase your personal property coverage to reflect the new items. If relatives visit frequently, check your liability limits too.

Pro tip: Create a home inventory of baby items with photos. Our Contents Calculator makes it easy.
Step 4

Boost Auto Insurance Coverage

With a child in the car, NC's minimum 50/100/50 liability isn't enough. Consider raising to 100/300/100 and adding MedPay ($2,000+) to cover medical bills for passengers regardless of fault.

Did you know? NC MedPay covers your child's medical bills even in someone else's car. It's one of the most affordable add-ons.
Step 5

Consider an Umbrella Policy

Once you have a family, your assets need extra protection. A $1M umbrella policy in NC costs around $150-300/year and extends your auto + home liability coverage. If someone sues after an accident, your family's savings are protected.

Step 6

Update Beneficiaries Everywhere

Add your child as a beneficiary (or set up a trust) on life insurance, 401(k), and bank accounts. Also designate a guardian in your will. In NC, if both parents pass without a will, the court decides who raises your children.
