VIN decoder questions

What information can a VIN tell me?

A 17-character VIN can identify the year, make, model and many factory details. Some manufacturers report more information than others, so a few fields may say “Not available.”

Does this show whether my exact vehicle has an open recall?

No. The recall list shows campaigns that may apply to the same year, make and model. Use the “Check this exact VIN” button to confirm open recalls through NHTSA's official checker.

Can a license plate reveal all vehicle details?

Not through a free public government decoder. Our scanner can read the plate characters from your photo, then direct you to NHTSA's official checker. It does not turn a plate into a VIN or registration record.

Do you save my VIN, plate or photo?

No. This page does not save them. Photo text recognition runs in your browser, and the photo is cleared when you reset or close the page. We also keep these fields out of analytics.

Why is a safety or fuel rating missing?

Not every vehicle was tested or has a matching public record. A missing rating does not mean the vehicle is unsafe or inefficient. It only means no matching result was available.
