The one ruleCompare the same coverage on every quote.

Step one
Get your details together first.
Good information makes quotes quicker and more accurate. Put these six things in one place.
Every driver
Names, birth dates, license numbers, and driving history.
Every vehicle
Year, make, model, VIN, mileage, and how each car is used.
Your current policy
Keep the declarations page nearby so the new quotes can match it.
Your household
List licensed household members, even if they do not drive often.
Recent changes
A move, new job, teen driver, paid-off loan, or shorter commute may matter.
A few questions
Write down what you want explained before you start calling.
Small detail, big difference
Tell the full story of how your household drives.
Leaving out a driver, commute, business use, or vehicle can make a quote look better than the final price. Clear details now help prevent surprises later.
If you are unsure whether something matters, ask. A five-minute question is easier than fixing a policy after a loss.
Step two
The big insurance words, made small.
You do not need to memorize these. You only need to know what each part is trying to protect.
01Liability
Helps pay for injuries or property damage when you are legally responsible for a crash.
Ask: Are these limits enough to protect what I own?
02Uninsured / underinsured driver
Helps when the driver who caused the crash has no insurance or not enough insurance.
Ask: What does this cover for people and for the car?
03Collision
Helps repair or replace your car after a crash, minus your deductible.
Ask: Could I comfortably pay this deductible tomorrow?
04Comprehensive
Helps with non-crash damage such as theft, hail, flood, fire, glass, or hitting an animal.
Ask: Is glass handled differently on this policy?
05Medical payments
Can help with accident-related medical or funeral costs, up to the policy limit.
Ask: Who in my household is covered?
06Rental and roadside help
Optional help with a rental car during covered repairs or towing when your car is disabled.
Ask: What are the daily limits and service limits?
Step three
Make every quote play by the same rules.
A lower number can be tempting. Before choosing it, make sure it is not lower because the protection changed.
Match these five things before you compare the price.
Same in every quoteCoverage limitsThe most each part of the policy can pay
DeductiblesWhat you pay first on certain damage claims
Six-month totalA cleaner comparison than one monthly payment
ExtrasRental, towing, custom equipment, or gap options
Payment detailsDown payment, fees, installments, and autopay rules
Tip: Ask for the total six-month cost, even if you plan to pay monthly.
Take this list with you
Six questions worth asking.
There is no silly question when you are buying protection for your family and vehicles.
Before you switch
Do not leave a gap between policies.
- 1
Confirm the start date.Make sure the new policy is active first.
- 2
Get your ID cards.Save them to your phone and place copies in the cars.
- 3
Then cancel the old policy.Ask about any final balance or refund.
- 4
Tell the lender. If a car is financed, confirm the lender is listed correctly.
Three easy mistakes to avoid
Slow down for one last check.
Shopping by price only
Less coverage or a higher deductible can hide inside a lower price.
Guessing at the details
Incorrect mileage, drivers, or vehicle use can change the final cost.
Canceling too soon
Let the new coverage begin before the old policy ends.
Quick answers
Auto insurance shopping FAQs
Four simple answers to the questions drivers ask most often.
What information do I need to shop for car insurance?
Gather driver names, birth dates and license information; vehicle year, make, model and VIN; how each vehicle is used; your current declarations page; and details about licensed household members.
Should every quote use the same coverage?
Yes. Compare the same liability limits, deductibles, optional coverages, drivers and vehicles before comparing price. Otherwise, a lower quote may simply provide less protection.
When should I cancel my old policy?
Confirm that the new policy is active and that you have your new insurance ID cards before canceling the old policy. If the vehicle is financed, confirm the lender information is correct.
Is the cheapest quote always the best choice?
Not always. Review limits, deductibles, optional benefits, payment fees and the full policy-term cost. The best choice balances an affordable price with protection you understand.
