MADE FOR YOUR TIME ON THE WATER

Different boats. Personal attention.

Whether you have a boat, a pontoon or a personal watercraft, we’ll help you find coverage options for the way you boat.

COVERAGE QUESTIONS TO DISCUSS

Coverage that fits your plans.

A useful comparison starts with what you own, how you use it, and the protection you want to discuss.

Hull, motor and trailer

Review insured items, values, deductibles and how a covered loss is settled.

Liability on the water

Discuss liability limits and available medical payments coverage alongside the physical-damage protection.

Equipment and navigation

Ask about equipment, towing, navigation boundaries and any storage or seasonal restrictions.

Options, eligibility and coverage vary by carrier and policy. These are topics to review, not a guarantee that every item is covered.

NORTH CAROLINA WATERS

WHO PREPARES YOUR QUOTE

Prepared in Elkin,
by a person you can call.

Bill Layne has run an independent agency in Elkin since 2005. Boat, pontoon and PWC quotes are prepared in our office and compared across the four carriers we are appointed with for watercraft.

Carrier availability depends on the boat, its use and underwriting. See every carrier we represent. Not sure what to gather? Here is what we need to quote you.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Boat insurance questions NC boaters ask.

Straight answers from a local agent. Every policy differs, so we confirm the specifics with the carrier before you buy.

Is boat insurance required in North Carolina?

No. North Carolina has no state law requiring insurance to own or operate a privately owned recreational boat or personal watercraft. In practice most boaters still need it: lenders require coverage on a financed boat, and many marinas, lake communities and storage yards ask for proof of liability before they hand you a slip. Liability protection also matters because many boats on NC lakes carry no insurance at all.

Doesn’t my homeowners policy already cover my boat?

Usually only a little. Most North Carolina homeowners policies give limited property coverage to small watercraft and low-horsepower motors, and the liability protection often stops once a boat passes a horsepower or length threshold written into the policy. Pontoons, bowriders, bass boats and personal watercraft typically need their own policy. We can read your homeowners policy alongside a boat quote so nothing is double-covered or left out. Full explainer: does homeowners insurance cover my boat?

What is the difference between agreed value and actual cash value?

Agreed value pays the amount listed on the policy if the boat is a total loss, with no deduction for depreciation. Actual cash value pays what the boat was worth at the time of the loss, so depreciation comes off the top. Newer and financed boats are often written on agreed value; older boats are often actual cash value. Ask which basis your quote uses before you compare prices. Read the agreed value vs. actual cash value guide.

Does my auto policy cover my boat trailer?

Partly. While you are towing, the liability on your auto policy generally extends to the trailer for damage it causes to other people or property. Damage to the trailer itself, and anything that happens to the boat while it sits on the trailer, usually has to come from the boat policy with the trailer listed on it. We check both policies so the trailer is not left in a gap.

What are navigation limits and lay-up periods?

The navigation area is where your coverage applies, for example inland lakes and rivers, or coastal waters out to a stated distance offshore. A lay-up period is a stretch of months the carrier expects the boat to be out of the water and stored, and using the boat during lay-up can void physical-damage coverage. Tell us if you trailer to the coast or boat year-round so the policy matches how you actually use it.

Do I need separate coverage for a jet ski or PWC?

In most cases, yes. Personal watercraft are rated separately from boats and carry their own liability, physical-damage and medical options. North Carolina also has PWC-specific rules: no one under 16 may operate one unless they are 14 or 15 and either riding with an adult of at least 18 on board or carrying proof of boating-safety education; no PWC may run between sunset and sunrise; and everyone aboard or being towed must wear a life jacket. See our jet ski and PWC insurance guide.

Does North Carolina require a boater education card?

Yes for many operators. North Carolina requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 to carry an approved boater education certificate to operate a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or more on public waters. The card is valid for life and must be aboard when you operate. Completing an approved safety course can also qualify you for a discount with some carriers, so tell us if you have one. Every rule is in our NC boating laws guide.

What is uninsured boater coverage?

It pays for injuries to you and your passengers caused by another operator who has no liability insurance or cannot be identified. Because North Carolina does not require boat insurance, a meaningful share of boats on the water carry none, which makes this coverage worth a conversation on any boat that carries family or friends.

What about on-water towing, fishing gear and electronics?

These are often optional or carry their own limits. On-water towing and assistance, personal effects, fishing equipment, trolling motors and electronics can each be added or raised. Tell us what you want protected and we will confirm the available options, limits and restrictions with the carrier.

What should I compare besides price?

Compare the insured value and how a total loss is settled, liability limits, medical payments, deductibles, the navigation area, lay-up terms and exclusions. Two quotes with the same premium can protect you very differently. Tell us where you boat and how you store it so the comparison is apples to apples.

Can you review my current boat policy?

Yes. Share your declarations page and any changes to your watercraft, operators or use through our policy review link. Our team in Elkin will read it with you and point out anything worth changing before your renewal.
