A few things to know before you move.

Does my landlord’s insurance cover my belongings?

Your landlord’s policy generally covers the building and landlord-owned property. It does not replace your furniture, clothing, electronics or other personal belongings.

What about roommates?

A renters policy generally covers the named insured and eligible household members. Unrelated roommates typically need their own policies unless the carrier and policy specifically include them. Review who is insured before assuming everyone is covered.

How much coverage do I need, including valuables?

Estimate the replacement cost of your belongings room by room. Review liability limits, deductibles and additional living expense limits. Jewelry, firearms, collectibles, cameras, money and business equipment may have special limits or need scheduled coverage. Ask whether belongings are covered at replacement cost or actual cash value.

What does my lease require?

Review the lease’s liability limit, proof-of-insurance deadline and property manager instructions, including any requested additional insured wording. Ask about pets, roommates and guests. We can help you review the policy against those requirements; coverage starts only when confirmed.

Does renters insurance cover flood or water damage?

Standard renters policies do not cover outside flood water; flood coverage needs a separate review. Some sudden and accidental plumbing leaks may be covered, depending on the policy. Gradual leaks, maintenance issues and other exclusions still matter.

Can I bundle renters with auto?

Ask us to compare available auto and renters options. Availability and any multi-policy discount vary by carrier and your circumstances. Review coverage and the overall price before deciding.

What does renters insurance cover?

It generally helps protect personal belongings, personal liability and additional living expenses after a covered loss. Loss of use covers eligible costs above your normal living expenses, subject to limits and conditions. Coverage depends on the policy, covered cause of loss, limits, deductible and endorsements.

What about my car, work equipment or everyday wear?

Damage to your vehicle belongs under auto coverage. Belongings stolen from a vehicle depend on the renters policy and type of property. Work-from-home equipment, tools or business inventory may need an endorsement or separate policy. Wear, pest damage, neglect, intentional damage and gradual problems are generally excluded.

More help choosing your limits

Add up your stuff: Walk room by room, including closets, garages and storage. Estimate what replacing your belongings would cost today.

Review liability: Consider your lease requirements and potential responsibility for injury or property damage.

Check special limits: Valuables and business property may have sub-limits or require an endorsement.

Choose a deductible: Review an amount you could afford after a covered loss, along with replacement cost versus actual cash value coverage.

Common scenarios: Fire, theft, a guest injury or sudden water damage can raise different coverage questions. The cause of loss and policy wording matter.
