What is the Highway 21 Road Market?
If you've lived in Surry County long, you already know the feeling: the last full weekend of July rolls around, and suddenly every front yard, church lot, and fairground along US 21 is stacked with treasures. That's the US Highway 21 Road Market — 100-plus miles of yard sales, sidewalk sales, arts and crafts, and home-cooked food running from Harmony in northern Iredell County all the way up the Blue Ridge to Wytheville, Virginia.
The event grew out of a group called Take a Break from the Interstate, launched in 2014 to bring travelers off I-77 and back onto the old two-lane road. US 21 was once the main "Lakes-to-Florida Highway," and the Road Market gives that historic route its busy weekend back — good for the towns, and a whole lot of fun for the rest of us.

A local tip
If it's your first year, don't try to do all 100 miles. Pick Elkin up to Sparta — you'll hit the biggest hubs, catch the mountain views, and still be home for supper.
How do I shop it like a local?
A little planning turns a long, hot drive into a great day. Here's how the regulars work the route:
Start early and pick your end
Serious shoppers hit the road at daybreak on Friday. Start from whichever end of U.S. 21 is closest to you and head toward the other.
Map the big hubs
Note the largest vendor clusters — downtown Elkin, the Thurmond Community Center, and the Higgins Fairgrounds in Sparta — so you don't drive past them.
Bring cash and a plan
Carry small bills for easy haggling, a tape measure for furniture, and blankets or straps to protect your finds on the drive home.
Save Sunday for deals
Vendors would rather sell than repack on the last day, so Sunday is the best time to negotiate on whatever is left.
Saturday is the busiest day, so plan extra time for traffic along the two-lane road. In Elkin, swing by the Farmers Market (9 a.m.–noon Saturday at Town Hall) and grab lunch downtown to cool off between stops.
