What Memorial Day Means — And Why It's Not Veterans Day
Hey neighbor. Memorial Day is the last Monday in May — this year, that's Monday, May 25, 2026. It's the federal holiday specifically set aside to remember the U.S. service members who died in service to our country.
It's easy to mix it up with Veterans Day in November, which honors all who have served — living and dead. Memorial Day is more solemn. It's for the families who got the folded flag instead of a homecoming. It's the day we read names, lay wreaths, and stand quietly while Taps plays.
Here in the NC foothills, that tradition runs deep. The Mount Airy War Memorial lists Surry Countians lost in every American war. The bandstand at Elkin Municipal Park has hosted local VFW ceremonies for decades. Jonesville reads each fallen veteran's name out loud and rings a bell. And every year, our neighbors show up — with lawn chairs and full hearts — to make sure none of those names are forgotten.
Memorial Day honors the fallen, not the living. The local ceremonies here in Surry County are how we keep those names alive — and they're free, open, and family-friendly.

Memorial Day matters to me personally. Right here in Elkin NC, we've insured Surry County veterans and their families for over twenty years, and our agency closes early on Memorial Day so our team can attend the ceremonies with their loved ones. Thank you to every Gold Star family in our community.
