Do this before the buses roll on August 12
Start here. Five things worth doing this week — before the first morning rush at Elkin Elementary, Dobson, Boonville or Millers Creek, not after it.
- Find your district’s first day and lock it in
Surry, Yadkin and Elkin City start Wednesday, August 12. Mount Airy City starts Monday, August 17. Wilkes County starts Monday, August 24. Put the right one in your phone with a reminder the Friday before.
- Drive the route once before day one
Run the trip at the actual time you’ll be making it. Sun angle, backed-up traffic at the school entrance and the spot where a bus stops on a blind curve all look different at 7:15 a.m. than they do on a Saturday.
- Read the stopped-bus rule out loud to every driver in the house
On a two-lane road, traffic in both directions must stop for a school bus with its stop arm out. Teenagers, grandparents helping with pickup, anyone who drives your cars — everybody needs to hear it before the buses roll.
- Add the new driver before the first trip to school, not after
A newly licensed driver has to be listed on the policy. Call before the first solo drive so coverage and limits are settled, instead of finding out how it works during a claim.
- Ask for the student and driver-training discounts by name
Good-student and driver-education credits are not always applied automatically. Ask which ones your carrier offers and what report card or certificate it needs to see.
None of that takes an afternoon. The first week of school is the one week a year when traffic patterns change overnight in every town from Ronda to Hays, and it is also the week new drivers make their first unsupervised trip anywhere.
Know your own district’s date, drive the route once, and settle the teen driver on your policy before the first bell — not after something happens.
Every August I get the same call: “He got his license last week and I meant to call you.” Ten minutes on the phone in July beats that conversation in September. It is genuinely one of the cheapest phone calls a parent makes all year.
A citation is not the same thing as a conviction, and a teenage driver is not automatically unaffordable. What actually determines the damage is how the charge is resolved, what your household record looks like, which credits your carrier offers, and which car the new driver is assigned to. The move is to find out early — not to assume the worst and put off the phone call.

The breaks worth putting on the fridge
Yadkin County families get Thanksgiving week off November 23-27, finish before Christmas on December 18 and come back January 6, with spring break March 8-12, 2027. Wilkes County runs Christmas break December 21 through January 5 and takes spring break March 29 through April 2, 2027 — a full three weeks earlier in the spring than Yadkinville and Boonville. If your family straddles the county line, as plenty do around Jonesville, Ronda and Roaring River, those are two different vacation weeks.
Do not borrow a neighbor’s date. In Surry, Yadkin and Elkin it is August 12; in Mount Airy, August 17; in Wilkes, August 24.

Why Wilkes starts 12 days after Surry
This is the question I hear most, and the answer is not a clerical error. North Carolina’s school calendar law tells traditional-calendar districts to open no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26. A lot of boards across the state have decided the law does not serve their students, and they vote for an earlier start anyway.
Surry County did exactly that. The board voted 5-0 to start August 12, knowing it conflicted with state law, after a survey in which 83.3% of 369 respondents backed the earlier date. Board member Tony Hutchens put it plainly: “We are serving the students of Surry County.” The driver is dual enrollment — more than 1,500 high schoolers take classes through Surry Community College, and the college does not wait until late August.
Elkin City Schools approved the same August 12 start on February 23, 2026, for the same reasons: aligning with the community college, and finishing first-semester exams before Christmas break rather than after it. Board chair Jennifer Kleinheksel noted the overwhelming majority of survey responses favored the earlier date.
Wilkes County went the other way. Its board approved the calendar that complies with the statute — August 24 to May 28 — even though members had said they preferred the earlier option that would have wrapped exams before the holidays. The compromise is Wilkes Early College High School, which sits on the Wilkes Community College campus and starts August 12 with the college.
Dual enrollment — high school students taking real college courses at Surry Community College or Wilkes Community College for credit. When the district calendar and the college calendar do not line up, those students start two schools on two different days.
The gap is a policy disagreement, not a mistake: three boards prioritized the community college calendar, one prioritized the statute.
What passing a stopped bus really costs
Now the part that is actually my job. On the roads around Pilot Mountain, State Road, Lowgap and East Bend, a school bus stops where the child lives — on a curve, at the bottom of a hill, on a road with no shoulder. Buses make those stops twice a day, roughly 180 days a year, starting next week.
Passing one while its stop arm is out is not a routine traffic ticket. A conviction is a Class 1 misdemeanor with a minimum $500 fine and five DMV points — and 12 DMV points in three years suspends a North Carolina license. If a child is struck, the charge escalates to a felony.
Then the insurance side arrives, and it is a separate scoreboard. Under North Carolina’s Safe Driver Incentive Plan, passing a stopped school bus carries four insurance points, which the rate schedule commonly translates to a surcharge around 80%.
Here is the change most drivers have not heard about. The Department of Insurance states that for convictions assigned four or more SDIP points, other than speeding, occurring on or after July 1, 2025, the surcharge period is five policy years — it used to be three. On a $1,600-a-year auto policy, an 80% surcharge is roughly $1,280 more per year. Across five years, that single decision can total more than $6,000 in premium, depending on your policy and carrier.
School zones are carved out of the forgiveness rule
North Carolina normally waives insurance points for speeding 10 mph or less over the limit when the speed is under 55 mph and you have a clean three-year record. That waiver does not apply to school zones. Every activated 20-mph zone in Elkin, Jonesville, Mount Airy, Dobson and Wilkesboro is therefore a place where a small ticket behaves like a big one.
One stopped-bus conviction can outlast a car loan: five DMV points, four insurance points, and a surcharge that now runs five policy years.
If you get a citation, do not just pay it online. Paying is pleading guilty exactly as written, which locks in the maximum points. Talk to a traffic attorney and call me — I can tell you what the financial damage actually looks like on your policy before you decide anything.
The teen driver in your driveway
For a lot of families in Elkin, Jonesville and Yadkinville, August 12 is not just the first day of school — it is the first day a sixteen-year-old drives themselves to it. That is a bigger insurance event than most parents expect, and the timing matters.
Three things are worth knowing before that first solo trip:
- A newly licensed driver has to go on the policy. A learner’s permit is usually handled differently than a license — once they are licensed, they are a rated driver in your household.
- Inexperience is priced, and not just for a few months. North Carolina rates a new driver as inexperienced for years after licensing. Good-student and driver-training credits are the practical offset, and a clean record protects eligibility for the newer inexperienced-safe-driver discount.
- Minimum limits are thin protection. North Carolina’s required liability limits are now 50/100/50. A newer pickup in a school parking lot can exceed the property damage limit by itself, and a serious injury claim can pass $50,000 quickly. This is the wrong coverage to buy at the legal floor.
Which vehicle the teen is assigned to matters too. So does whether the car they drive to Starmount, Forbush, East Wilkes or North Surry carries collision coverage worth having. Those are five-minute conversations that change the number on your bill more than shopping alone does.
Call before the first drive to school, ask for the student and training discounts by name, and do not leave a new driver on minimum liability limits.
