Friday, July 3: Elkin FreedomFest

The weekend kicks off right here at home. FreedomFest is Elkin's free, family-friendly Independence Day celebration, and it runs the night before the Fourth so you can enjoy it and still catch Saturday's events. Music starts in the late afternoon and builds to a fireworks finale after dark.

FreedomFest is my favorite night of the year in Elkin. Get to the rec park before the music starts at 5, spread out a blanket, and you'll have a perfect view of the fireworks without fighting for a spot.

Saturday, July 4: Mount Airy's parade & fireworks

Mount Airy throws the county's biggest party, and it's an all-day affair. The morning starts with a reading of the Declaration of Independence, rolls into a parade down Main Street, and includes a charity pie-eating contest before fireworks light up the night at Veterans Memorial Park. Plan for street closures and get downtown early.

What I Tell My Clients

If you're parking downtown for the parade and staying for fireworks, leave room around your car so you're not boxed in afterward. Holiday traffic in the foothills is friendly, but it's still traffic.

How can I celebrate safely?

Half the fun of the Fourth is doing it the easy way — let the pros handle the big booms while you handle the cooler. A few simple things keep the holiday happy for everyone, pets included.

July 4th safety checklist: enjoy the community show, keep grills clear, bring pets inside, and have a sober driver
Four quick reminders for a safe and happy Fourth.
In plain English

Consumer fireworks in NC — most aerial and explosive fireworks are illegal for personal use in North Carolina; only certain ground-based and hand-held novelties are generally allowed. When in doubt, leave the big show to the professionals.

  1. Enjoy the community show

It's free, it's safer, and it's a better display than anything in a backyard.

  2. Keep grills clear

Set up away from the house, railings, and low branches, and never leave a hot grill unattended.

  3. Bring the pets inside

Fireworks spook animals — a quiet room indoors keeps them calm and safe.

  4. Have a sober driver

Holiday roads are busy. Line up your ride home before the festivities start.

The safest fireworks are the ones you watch — let the community show light up the sky while you relax.

The Mount Airy Independence Day parade begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, 2026, downtown. Before it, there is a reading of the Declaration of Independence at 10 a.m. in the courtyard of the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History at 301 N. Main St., and afterward a charity pie-eating contest. Arrive early for a good spot along Main Street.
