NORTH CAROLINA RENEWAL & SHOPPING GUIDE

Before you shop, know what you are comparing.

Your neighbor's premium cannot tell you what your home should cost. Home details, coverage, claims history, carrier rules and, where used, credit-based insurance scoring can affect an individual quote. Start with your own renewal and declarations page.

01 · YOUR RENEWAL

Why did my home insurance renewal go up?

Ask your agent to walk through last year's policy and this year's offer. Check whether the dwelling amount, deductible, endorsements, discounts or company pricing changed. A claim-free year does not guarantee an unchanged premium.

If your notice mentions consent to rate, ask which amount is the company's renewal offer and what the disclosure means for your policy. It is separate from the question of whether another carrier will offer suitable coverage.

02 · COVERAGE FIRST

What should I compare besides price?

  • Dwelling coverage: the amount and basis used to insure rebuilding your home.
  • Roof settlement: replacement cost, actual cash value or another settlement schedule.
  • Deductibles: the regular deductible and any separate wind/hail deductible.
  • Water protection: water backup options and exclusions; flood may require separate coverage.
  • Belongings and liability: limits, settlement terms and any special limits important to you.

A smaller bill may come with different coverage. Ask for those differences in writing before deciding.

03 · INLAND NORTH CAROLINA

What should I tell the agent about my home?

Whether your home is in the Piedmont, Triad, Charlotte region, Triangle or mountains, the details of the property matter more than a statewide average.

  • Rural homes: share the address so the agent can check fire protection information and property details.
  • Older homes: have approximate roof, electrical, plumbing and heating update dates ready.
  • Mountain and foothills homes: describe access, occupancy, renovations and any known flood concerns.
  • Suburban and city homes: mention additions, detached structures, home businesses or changes in use.

Carrier eligibility depends on the individual home. An older roof does not lead to the same answer from every company.

04 · PREPARE TO SHOP

What do I need for a home insurance quote?

  • Your current declarations page and renewal notice.
  • The property address and how the home is occupied.
  • Approximate roof installation year and recent home updates.
  • Information about previous claims and current coverage concerns.
  • Your renewal date and mortgage company information, if applicable.

Unsure about a detail? Say so. Our team can explain what is needed for your situation. Do not include passwords, Social Security numbers or credit reports in the renewal upload.

05 · IF YOU DECIDE TO SWITCH

Coordinate the new policy before cancelling.

Confirm that the new coverage has been accepted and that its effective date matches your needs before cancelling the current policy. Ask about required inspections, outstanding documents, payment and any mortgage or escrow updates. A quote request alone does not start insurance.

What would you pay after a claim?

Your deductible is the part you pay first. Wind or hail may have a separate one.

Have your belongings or water concerns changed?

Think about valuable new belongings and where water could enter or back up into your home. Some losses need extra coverage.
