Good questions. Clear answers.

Do I need insurance to get an NC driver license?

NCDMV generally requires liability-insurance proof from an NC-licensed insurer for a license application. DL-123 is one accepted option. If you do not own a car, check the rules for your circumstances with NCDMV and ask our agency which insurance documentation fits your situation.

What is the difference between DL-123 and FS-1?

DL-123 is one way to document liability insurance for a driver-license application. FS-1 is used for vehicle-insurance verification and may be sent electronically by an insurer when required. They are not interchangeable, and not everyone needs both.

How soon must I transfer my license and vehicle registration?

If you plan to drive, obtain an NC driver license within 60 days of establishing permanent residence. Vehicle registration can be due sooner, depending on employment and your prior state’s reciprocity period. Check NCDMV before scheduling your visits.

What should I review when buying or renting a home in NC?

Buyers should review the closing date, lender requirements, wind/hail deductibles, roof settlement terms, and optional protections. Renters should review the lease start date, belongings, liability limits, and landlord requirements. Ask about available auto plus home or renters options; availability and eligibility vary.

Check the current requirements.

Use NCDMV’s official instructions for your situation before a visit. County choices personalize this plan; statewide DMV requirements still apply.
