More choice. Local guidance.

Carrier and coverage availability depend on your vehicle, driving history, and eligibility. We also represent Hagerty for classic & collector vehicles.

Coverage, without the confusion

A few choices. A clearer picture.

Start with what you want to protect. We can help you compare limits, deductibles, and coverage options.

Liability

For injuries or damage you cause to others. It does not repair your own car.

What to know

If you cause a crash, bodily injury and property damage liability may help pay covered claims from other people, up to your policy limits.

Collision & comprehensive

For damage to your own car, with a deductible you choose.

What to know

Collision generally covers crash damage. Comprehensive generally covers events such as theft, hail, fire, or an animal strike. “Full coverage” is not a standard policy package.

Uninsured & underinsured drivers

Protection when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little.

What to know

UM and UIM may help with covered losses when another driver cannot pay through adequate liability insurance. The type of loss, policy terms, and limits determine what applies.

Your household & daily drive

Review who drives, where you keep the car, and how you use it.

What to know

Tell your agent about household drivers, a new commute, or delivery and rideshare work so the carrier can review the right coverage and rating information.

North Carolina rules, current for 2026

What North Carolina requires, and what changed on July 1, 2025.

Several auto rating and coverage rules changed for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025. Here are the key rules and statutory qualifications, each tied to the official state source.

  1. Minimum liability is now 50/100/50. Bodily injury of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident, plus $50,000 property damage, for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025. We also quote higher limits such as 100/300/100 alongside the minimum to protect your household assets.
  2. Underinsured motorist coverage is included on every policy. Since July 1, 2025 it is included on new and renewal policies, whether a driver is underinsured is measured against your total covered damages, and interpolicy stacking may apply when multiple policies cover the loss.
  3. The inexperienced operator surcharge runs eight years for drivers first licensed on or after July 1, 2025 (up from three years for drivers first licensed before July 1, 2025). It applies to newly licensed teens and adults licensed for the first time on or after that date. How the eight-year surcharge works.
  4. SDIP surcharge and lookback periods changed with specific exceptions. Convictions carrying four or more Safe Driver Incentive Plan points now carry a five-year surcharge period instead of three — except four-point speeding convictions, which remain on a three-year surcharge period. Convictions under four points still carry a three-year surcharge, while the lookback window to check for prior convictions on lesser speeding waivers and Prayer for Judgment Continued (PJC) eligibility is five years (one PJC per household policy every five years). Check your points.
  5. Coverage cannot lapse without the DMV knowing. Your carrier notifies NCDMV when liability coverage ends, and an uncovered registration gap brings civil penalties and potential plate suspension. What the DMV notice means and how to pay a lapse fee.
  6. Disclose all licensed household members up front. North Carolina carriers generally require licensed drivers living in your household to be listed on the policy (or, where carrier rules and state law permit, formally addressed); undisclosed household drivers can change your quote during underwriting or complicate a claim.

Proof of NC Residency: One Document Finishes Your Policy

North Carolina carriers require us to verify that you live in NC when you're newly licensed or moving from another state. Without it, a policy can be cancelled or hit with an out-of-state surcharge — so we collect it up front. The good news: any ONE of these documents showing your NC address does the job.

Utility bill
Power, water, gas — must show your NC service address
Personal property tax receipt
Paid within the last 12 months
Real property tax receipt
Paid within the last 12 months
NC driver's license
Active and unexpired
NC vehicle registration
Current registration card
Military ID
Active-duty stationed in NC
NC student ID
Current NC school or college
Federal tax return (1040)
Last year's, showing your NC address
Home or renters declarations page
Your policy's dec page with the NC address
Two things that will NOT work: cell phone bills are not accepted at all, and a utility bill only counts if it shows your North Carolina address — a bill forwarded from your old state doesn't qualify.

Common Questions

For North Carolina auto policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, the minimum liability limits are 50/100/50: $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 bodily injury per accident, and $50,000 property damage. Many drivers choose higher limits such as 100/300/100 for stronger asset protection.
The best way to lower NC car insurance is to compare quotes from multiple carriers through an independent agent like Bill Layne Insurance. Other savings include safe driver discounts, bundling auto and home, good student discounts, and completing a defensive driving course.
If you have a car loan or lease, your lender or leasing company requires physical damage coverage (comprehensive and collision) in addition to liability. If you own your vehicle outright, liability-only may reduce your premium — a common guideline is the 10% rule: if the annual cost of comprehensive and collision coverage (plus your deductible exposure) exceeds about 10% of your car's current market value, reviewing liability-only may make sense.
While NC requires 50/100/50, we recommend 100/300/100 to properly protect your assets and future earnings.
Driving record, licensing history, vehicle type, garaging location, and coverage selections all play a role. NC uses the Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP) for moving violations and at-fault accidents. For policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, convictions carrying 4 or more SDIP points carry a 5-year surcharge period (except 4-point speeding convictions, which remain 3 years), and drivers first licensed on or after July 1, 2025 face an 8-year inexperienced operator surcharge period.
You may be able to reduce your premium by bundling home and auto policies, maintaining a clean driving record, asking about available discounts, increasing your deductible if you have adequate savings, and comparing quotes from multiple carriers through an independent agent.
The NC Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP) is North Carolina's statutory system that assigns surcharge points for moving violations and at-fault accidents. Under Session Law 2025-45 (effective July 1, 2025), convictions carrying 4 or more SDIP points now carry a 5-year surcharge period — except 4-point speeding convictions, which remain on a 3-year surcharge period. Convictions under 4 points still follow a 3-year surcharge period, while the lookback window for prior convictions on lesser speeding waivers and Prayer for Judgment Continued (PJC) eligibility is 5 years (1 PJC per household policy every 5 years). In addition, drivers first licensed on or after July 1, 2025 have an 8-year inexperienced operator surcharge period (drivers first licensed before July 1, 2025 remain under the 3-year rule).
An independent agent like Bill Layne Insurance represents multiple insurance carriers, comparing quotes from several companies on your behalf. A captive agent works for only one company and can only offer that company's products. Independent agents can help you find more competitive pricing by shopping your coverage across multiple carriers.
