NORTH CAROLINA · JET SKI & PWC INSURANCE

Jet ski and PWC insurance
that matches how you ride.

Sea-Doo, WaveRunner, Kawasaki Jet Ski: carriers call them all personal watercraft, and they insure them differently from boats. Here is what a PWC policy covers, the North Carolina rules that shape it, and the three questions that decide the price.

Why a PWC is not just a small boat

Personal watercraft are rated on their own because the risk looks different: more operators per machine, younger operators, more guests, frequent towing, and a hull that is easy to steal off a trailer. North Carolina law treats them differently too, with their own operator age rules and a sunset-to-sunrise ban. Most homeowners policies exclude liability for PWCs entirely, so a separate policy is the normal answer rather than the exception.

North Carolina PWC rules that affect your policy

  • No one under 14 may operate a PWC. Riders who are 14 or 15 need an adult of at least 18 aboard or proof of boating-safety education.
  • No operation between sunset and sunrise.
  • Everyone aboard or being towed wears a life jacket, and the cut-off lanyard stays attached to the operator.
  • Operators born on or after January 1, 1988 need the boater education card like any other motorized vessel.
  • Every PWC must be registered and titled with the Wildlife Resources Commission.

Carriers ask about every operator by age and experience. A teen rider without a safety card can make a PWC hard to place; with the card it is routine. The full set of rules is in our NC boating laws guide.

What a PWC policy covers

  • Liability for injury or damage you cause to others, including while towing a tube or wakeboard. This is the coverage that protects your house and savings.
  • Physical damage to the PWC from collision, submersion, fire, storm and theft, on agreed value or actual cash value.
  • Theft from the trailer or driveway. Confirm the policy covers the machine on land, not only on the water.
  • Medical payments for you and your passengers.
  • Uninsured boater coverage for injuries caused by an operator who carries no insurance.
  • Trailer and accessories such as covers, tow ropes and audio by stated value.
  • On-water towing, which matters more on a PWC than any other craft because a dead machine cannot be paddled home.

The three questions that decide the price

  1. Who rides it? Every operator's age, experience and record. Guests who ride it are covered as permitted operators on most policies, but a household teen must be listed.
  2. How fast is it? Supercharged and high-horsepower models rate higher. A three-seat touring model rates lower than a two-seat performance model of the same value.
  3. Where does it live? Trailered at home, on a lift, or in a rack at a marina, and whether you ride inland lakes only or also the coast and the Intracoastal.

Two or more PWCs on one policy usually rate better than two separate policies, and bundling the PWC with your auto or home policy with the same carrier can help as well.

What to have ready

  • Year, make, model and hull identification number for each PWC.
  • Horsepower and whether it is supercharged.
  • Every operator's name, date of birth, experience and boater education status.
  • Trailer details if you want it covered.
  • Storage address and where you ride.
  • Current declarations page if already insured.

Jet ski insurance questions

Is jet ski insurance required in North Carolina?

No state law requires it for a privately owned personal watercraft. Lenders require it on a financed machine, and many lakes, marinas and rental communities require proof of liability. Because homeowners policies generally exclude PWC liability, going without means carrying that risk yourself.

Does homeowners insurance cover a jet ski?

Rarely for liability and only in a limited way for the machine itself. Most North Carolina homeowners policies exclude liability for personal watercraft and cap watercraft property coverage at a small amount, so a PWC normally needs its own policy.

Can my 15-year-old drive our jet ski?

Only with an adult of at least 18 aboard, or if the rider carries proof of age and an approved boating-safety certificate. No one under 14 may operate a PWC in North Carolina, and no PWC may run between sunset and sunrise.

Is my jet ski covered if it is stolen off the trailer in my driveway?

It can be, but confirm it. Some policies cover theft only on the water or in a secured location. We check the theft and storage wording on every PWC quote.

Am I covered if a friend rides my jet ski and gets hurt?

Liability and medical payments on a PWC policy generally extend to permitted operators and their passengers, subject to the policy's operator rules. Household members who ride regularly must be listed by name.

Ride with the right policy behind you.
