Who writes and who reviews
Every guide, blog post, and answer on this site is published under the name of Bill Layne, a North Carolina property and casualty agent (NC License #6571216) who has quoted and serviced auto and home policies in Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes, and Stokes counties since 2005. Bill decides what gets written, supplies the examples from real agency work, and reviews every figure, form name, and statute reference before a page goes live.
We use AI writing tools to help draft, outline, and illustrate articles. A licensed agent reviews the draft, corrects it against carrier manuals, NC Rate Bureau filings, NC DMV and NC Department of Insurance sources, and removes anything that is true in general but wrong for North Carolina. Nothing is published unread.
What we will and will not say
- We explain how North Carolina rules and carrier practices actually work, including the parts that make insurance cost more.
- We do not promise savings amounts, "cheapest" rates, or "full coverage." Rates are set by carriers and depend on your record, property, and coverage choices.
- When a carrier we represent is discussed, we say so. We do not write negative pieces about carriers we do not represent to steer business.
- Testimonials are from real customers and are shown as written, without payment.
How rate examples are gathered
When a page shows a premium example, it comes from an actual quote run through the agency's carrier rating systems for a standardized, hypothetical home or vehicle in the town named, not from a modeled national dataset. Each example shows the date it was quoted, the assumptions behind it (coverage amounts, deductibles, construction, protection class), and whether it reflects an approved manual rate or a consent-to-rate premium. The full assumptions are published on the methodology page that every example links to. We keep the underlying quote on file with its quote number.
Examples are one dated data point for one hypothetical risk. They are never presented as averages, offers, or a prediction of your premium, and they do not name a carrier next to a price unless that carrier has approved it in writing.
Review cadence
- Rate examples: re-run quarterly (February, May, August, November) and within two weeks of the June 1 North Carolina Rate Bureau homeowners rate change. The quoted date and last-verified date on the page move only when the figure was actually re-checked.
- Law and DMV guides: re-checked when the General Assembly or NC DMV changes the rule, and at least once a year.
- Blog posts: carry their publish date. Older posts are updated in place when the facts change, with the modified date shown, or are redirected to a newer guide on the same topic.
Corrections
If you find an error, email Save@BillLayneInsurance.com with the page link. We correct factual errors as soon as they are confirmed, update the modified date, and note material corrections in the change log on the page when one exists. We would rather be told than be wrong.
