How we choose between them
Every carrier files its own rates and underwriting rules with the North Carolina Department of Insurance, so the same house or the same driver can be priced very differently from one company to the next. When you ask for a quote we run the risk through the companies below that have an appetite for it, compare coverage as well as price, and tell you which one we would pick and why. We are paid a commission by whichever carrier issues the policy; see our Advertising Disclosure.
Home insurance
NC Grange Mutual
Homeowners · Dwelling fire · FarmA North Carolina mutual company, owned by its policyholders and writing only in this state. NC Grange underwrites each home individually rather than by checklist, which is why it is often our answer for older homes, homes with a trampoline, a dog, or an outbuilding that a national carrier declined, and rural properties. It offers the equipment breakdown and inland flood endorsements we explain in our NC Grange guide.
Alamance Farmers Mutual
Homeowners · Dwelling fire · Rural propertyAnother North Carolina mutual with deep roots in the Piedmont. We use Alamance Farmers for well-kept older homes, rural and farm-adjacent dwellings, and homeowners who want a company whose underwriters know the county they live in.
Nationwide
Homeowners · Auto · BundlesNationwide is our most common bundle carrier: one company for the house and the cars, with a multi-policy discount and one claims number. It fits newer and well-maintained homes and drivers with clean records who want a national brand with local agency service.
Travelers
Homeowners · Auto · UmbrellaTravelers competes hard on preferred homes and preferred drivers, and it is often where we place higher-value homes, families who need an umbrella policy on top of home and auto, and customers who value a large national claims operation.
Foremost
Mobile & manufactured homes · Vacant & seasonal · Specialty propertyForemost is our specialist for mobile and manufactured homes, vacant or seasonal dwellings, and properties that fall outside a standard homeowners program. When a standard carrier says no, Foremost is usually the next call.
Auto insurance
Progressive
Auto · Motorcycle · DL-123 filings · Non-standardProgressive writes the widest range of drivers we see, from clean records to drivers who need a North Carolina DL-123 filing after a lapse or suspension. Same-day filings, usage-based discounts, and flexible payment plans make it our go-to when a driver has points, a lapse, or a tight budget.
National General
Auto · Non-standard · DL-123 filingsNational General (part of Allstate) is a strong second market for drivers with violations, accidents, or prior lapses, and for households that need a non-owner policy or a DL-123 certificate. We compare it against Progressive on nearly every non-standard quote.
Dairyland
Motorcycle · ATV · Non-standard autoDairyland is our motorcycle and off-road specialist and a third market for hard-to-place auto risks. It is often the answer for a rider who wants agreed-value or accessory coverage a standard auto carrier will not offer.
Hagerty
Classic & collector carsHagerty insures classic, antique, and collector vehicles on an agreed-value basis with limited-use pricing. If you have a car that is worth more than the book says, this is where it belongs, not on a standard auto policy that would pay actual cash value.
