Independent Agent vs. Buying Insurance Online in North Carolina: Why One Quote Isn’t a Comparison

Buying online gets you one company’s price. An independent agent can put several side by side, and is still there after you buy.

Online quotes are easy. A few minutes, a few clicks, and a price shows up on the screen.

The question is what that price is being compared to. If it came from one company’s website, the honest answer is: nothing. It’s one company’s answer to one set of choices you made.

This article explains the difference between buying direct and working with an independent agent in North Carolina, and why, if you’ve already got an online quote, it’s worth bringing it to an agent before you buy.

One website, one company

There are three common ways to buy home or auto insurance:

  • Direct online or by phone. You buy from the company itself. There is no local agent on the policy.
  • A captive agent. A local agent who sells for one company only.
  • An independent agent. A local agent appointed with several companies, who can place your policy with whichever one fits.
Independent agent
A licensed agent who represents more than one insurance company. The agent works with you to choose among them, rather than selling one company’s policy.

The first two give you one company’s underwriting and one company’s price. Only the third lets you compare companies in a single conversation.

What “shopping carriers” actually means

Insurance companies don’t all want the same customers. Each one decides which homes and drivers it wants to insure and at what price.

On a North Carolina homeowners policy, companies weigh things like roof age and condition, credit-based insurance scores, prior claims, outbuildings, dogs and trampolines. They don’t weigh them the same way. A roof that one company prices up, another may accept as is. We cover those factors in our guide to NC homeowners insurance laws.

Many NC home policies are also written on consent to rate, a price above the state-approved rate. Whether a company uses it on your home, and by how much, varies by company. Our consent-to-rate guide explains how to spot it.

That’s the whole point of shopping. The best fit for your neighbor may not be the best fit for you, and one website can’t tell you which company that is.

Already have an online quote? Bring it to an agent

This is the easiest step and the one people skip. You already did the work of choosing coverage. Send that quote to an independent agent and ask for the same limits and deductibles with the companies they represent.

A few things happen:

  • You find out whether the online price is competitive. Maybe it is. Then you buy it knowing that, not hoping.
  • Someone checks what the quote left out. Online forms default to choices you may not have noticed: a percentage wind/hail deductible, lower liability limits, missing water backup coverage.
  • You still get the online conveniences. Many of the companies we place customers with offer online account access, payments and ID cards for agency-written policies too.

Asking for a comparison quote from our office doesn’t cost you anything. If the online quote turns out to be the best fit, we’ll say so.

After you buy: who can actually see your policy?

Price is the part of insurance you see on day one. Service is the part you see on the bad day.

Agent of record
The agent listed on your policy with the insurance company. An outside agent generally cannot access the policy in the company’s system or request changes without the insurer’s authorization.

When you buy direct, there is no agent of record. If you call a local agent later with a question about that policy, the agent can’t pull it up, can’t make a change and can’t speak to the company for you. You’ll be working with the company’s service center or claims line on your own.

Where an agent helps

  • At claim time. Reporting the claim, understanding what the policy says about it, and knowing who to call next.
  • At renewal. Reading the new declarations page, explaining a rate change and re-shopping if it no longer fits. See our home renewal checkup.
  • When a nonrenewal arrives. Read the notice promptly and contact your agent. Notice requirements depend on the policy and applicable law; an independent agent can help you review the deadline and look for another company.
  • When life changes. A new driver, a refinance, a new mortgagee, a paid-off home, a teen’s first car.

We describe the tools and help that come with working through our office in the Bill Layne Client Advantage.

When buying direct online may be fine

Buying direct isn’t wrong. Some people want to handle everything themselves, have simple needs, and are comfortable reading a policy on their own.

If that’s you, compare at least a few quotes for the same coverage before you buy, and read the declarations page closely. Our declarations-page explainer can help.

Just know what you’re trading: one company’s answer, and no agent on the policy if something goes wrong.

Questions to ask about any quote

Before you buy

Whether the quote came from a website or an agent.

  • How many companies was this compared against?
  • Is the dwelling limit enough to rebuild, not just the purchase price?
  • Is the wind/hail deductible a flat amount or a percentage? What is that in dollars?
  • Is this premium on consent to rate?
  • What isn’t included, such as water backup or roof coverage limits?
  • Who do I call when I have a claim or a question, and can they see my policy?

FAQ

Is it cheaper to buy insurance online than through an agent?

Not automatically. An online quote is one company’s price for the coverage you selected. An independent agent can quote several companies for the same coverage, so you can see whether that online price is actually competitive.

What is an independent insurance agent?

An independent agent is appointed with several insurance companies and can quote and place your policy with whichever one fits. A direct or captive channel sells one company’s policies.

Can my agent help with a policy I bought online?

Usually not in any detail. If you bought direct, you have no agent of record on the policy, so an outside agent can’t view it in the company’s system or make changes for you. Questions go to the company’s service center.

I already have an online quote. Should I still call an agent?

Yes. Bring the quote, and ask the agent to price the same limits and deductibles with the companies they represent. You lose nothing by comparing, and you learn whether one quote was the best option.
