More choice. Local guidance.

Carrier and coverage availability depend on your vehicle, driving history, and eligibility.

Coverage, without the confusion

A few choices. A clearer picture.

Start with what you want to protect. We can help you compare limits, deductibles, and coverage options.

Liability

For injuries or damage you cause to others. It does not repair your own car.

What to know

If you cause a crash, bodily injury and property damage liability may help pay covered claims from other people, up to your policy limits.

Collision & comprehensive

For damage to your own car, with a deductible you choose.

What to know

Collision generally covers crash damage. Comprehensive generally covers events such as theft, hail, fire, or an animal strike. “Full coverage” is not a standard policy package.

Uninsured & underinsured drivers

Protection when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little.

What to know

UM and UIM may help with covered losses when another driver cannot pay through adequate liability insurance. The type of loss, policy terms, and limits determine what applies.

Your household & daily drive

Review who drives, where you keep the car, and how you use it.

What to know

Tell your agent about household drivers, a new commute, or delivery and rideshare work so the carrier can review the right coverage and rating information.

North Carolina rules, current for 2026

What North Carolina requires, and what changed on July 1, 2025.

Several auto rules changed for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025. These are the ones that decide your premium and your eligibility, each tied to the state source.

  1. Minimum liability is now 50/100/50. Bodily injury of fifty thousand per person and one hundred thousand per accident, and fifty thousand property damage, for every policy issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025. We quote higher limits alongside the minimum because the minimum is often exhausted by a single hospital stay.
  2. Underinsured motorist coverage is included on every policy. Since July 1, 2025 it is part of all new and renewed policies, whether a driver is underinsured is judged against your total damages, and the limits on more than one policy can be added together.
  3. The inexperienced operator surcharge now runs eight years for drivers first licensed on or after July 1, 2025, up from three. It applies to newly licensed teens and to adults licensed for the first time. How the eight-year surcharge works.
  4. SDIP points stay on your rate longer. A surcharge for four or more Safe Driver Incentive Plan points now applies for five years instead of three, and the lookback for minor speeding and prayers for judgment moved from three to five years. Check your points.
  5. Coverage cannot lapse without the DMV knowing. Your carrier notifies NCDMV when liability coverage ends, and an uncovered gap brings a penalty and can cost your plates. What the DMV notice means and how to pay a lapse fee.
  6. Every licensed household member is rated or excluded. North Carolina carriers require each driver in the home to be listed on the policy or formally excluded; leaving someone off is the most common reason a quote changes at issue.

Proof of NC Residency: One Document Finishes Your Policy

North Carolina carriers require us to verify that you live in NC when you're newly licensed or moving from another state. Without it, a policy can be cancelled or hit with an out-of-state surcharge — so we collect it up front. The good news: any ONE of these documents showing your NC address does the job.

Utility bill
Power, water, gas — must show your NC service address
Personal property tax receipt
Paid within the last 12 months
Real property tax receipt
Paid within the last 12 months
NC driver's license
Active and unexpired
NC vehicle registration
Current registration card
Military ID
Active-duty stationed in NC
NC student ID
Current NC school or college
Federal tax return (1040)
Last year's, showing your NC address
Home or renters declarations page
Your policy's dec page with the NC address
Two things that will NOT work: cell phone bills are not accepted at all, and a utility bill only counts if it shows your North Carolina address — a bill forwarded from your old state doesn't qualify.

Common Questions

For North Carolina auto policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, the minimum liability limits are 50/100/50: $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 bodily injury per accident, and $50,000 property damage. Many drivers choose higher limits such as 100/300/100 for stronger asset protection.
The best way to lower NC car insurance is to compare quotes from multiple carriers through an independent agent like Bill Layne Insurance. Other savings include safe driver discounts, bundling auto and home, good student discounts, and completing a defensive driving course.
If you have a car loan or lease, your lender requires full coverage (comprehensive + collision). If you own your car outright, liability-only may save money — but consider the 10% rule: if your annual premium exceeds 10% of your car's value, liability-only may be worth considering.
While NC requires 50/100/50, we recommend 100/300/100 to properly protect your assets and future earnings.
Driving record, age, vehicle type, credit score, and location all play a role. NC uses the "Safe Driver Incentive Plan" (SDIP) which adds surcharges for violations. As of July 2025, serious violations (4+ points) now carry a 5-year surcharge period, and new drivers face an 8-year inexperienced operator surcharge.
You may be able to reduce your premium by bundling home and auto policies, maintaining a clean driving record, asking about available discounts, increasing your deductible if you have adequate savings, and comparing quotes from multiple carriers through an independent agent.
The NC Safe Driver Incentive Plan is a statewide system that adds surcharge points to your insurance for moving violations and at-fault accidents. As of July 1, 2025, violations carrying 4 or more points now stay on your record for 5 years (up from 3). Minor violations under 4 points still follow a 3-year surcharge period. Prayer for Judgment (PJC) is now limited to 1 per policy every 5 years. Drivers first licensed after July 1, 2025 face an inexperienced operator surcharge for 8 years instead of 3.
An independent agent like Bill Layne Insurance represents multiple insurance carriers, comparing quotes from several companies on your behalf. A captive agent works for only one company and can only offer that company's products. Independent agents can help you find more competitive pricing by shopping your coverage across multiple carriers.
